The San Antonio Music Awards Showcase isn’t until September 26th, but voting for the awards is already underway. You can cast a vote (one per category per day) in up to 35 categories for your favorite local artists online. Winners will be recognized as the best in the city in the Current’s September 23 Music Awards issue. To make things a little easier for those wanting to show extra support for San Antonio’s LGBTQ artists, I’ve included some names and possible nomination categories below.
You can nominate community activist and musician Saakred for Best Singer/Songwriter; rapper Chris Conde for Best Hip Hop Artist; Jen Alva of Girl in a Coma and Fea for Best Bassist; Phanie Diaz, also of Girl in a Coma, for Best Drummer; Girl in a Coma for Best Indie Rock Band; Pink Leche for Best Electronic Artist (although he has labeled his music “queer bass”); Ken Slavin for Best Vocalist; and DJ BITTER_TEEN (Joe Michael Guerra) and DJ PuppyButt (Henry Rodriguez) can both be nominated for Best DJ.
Got a favorite song, album, or video by one of the above (or any other) LGBT artists? Nominate it for Best Song, Album, or Video.
And if you feel any of these artists don’t get as much love as they should, go ahead and submit their name under Best Underrated Artist/Band!
Other categories include Best DIY Venue, Best New Band, and twenty-two other labels. The poll will be open until August 31, so get voting!
