On June 14, Progressive Religious Organizations of San Antonio (PRO SA) will host an interfaith service, Pride: Claiming our Faiths, a virtual celebration where LGBTQ worshipers of different faiths will come together for music, history, reflections, and a virtual social gathering on Zoom afterwards.
PRO SA is a network of clergy and lay people concerned with the spiritual well-being of the LGBTQ community. It was formed in 2006 to support the faith communities which work to serve the LGBTQ community and to be advocates for their spiritual well-being.
Members of PRO SA participating in the interfaith service include: Dignity San Antonio, University Presbyterian Church, Metropolitan Community Church San Antonio, Unity Church of San Antonio, First Unitarian Universalist Church, Temple Beth-El, Travis Park Church, Bethany Congregational United Church of Christ, Rolling Oaks Christian Church, Madison Square Presbyterian Church, Touchstone Community Church of Boerne, (UCC.) Episcopal Church of Reconciliation, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
The interfaith service is an annual Pride tradition. This year, because of concerns during the coronavirus epidemic, the event is being held online.
“Many people have been traumatized by early anti-gay experiences in their faith communities. I want them to know things have changed in many churches and there are welcoming places for them. Our interfaith pride service is one way to communicate that,” said Carol Collins of the First Unitarian Universalist Church.
“In this strange and different time, it is so important for LGBTQ+ people of faith to be visible and connect and support one another,” said Deb Myers of Dignity San Antonio. “This year’s virtual pride interfaith service will let the community know that we are here and continue to claim our faiths with pride.”
