A new fitness-centered outlet for LGBTQ support

The LezMove summer exercise series is being held for free this summer in Crockett Park for the LGBTQ community and its allies. Organized by LezRideSA and sponsored by the Bexar County Health Collaborative, the goal behind the fitness classes is to create a safe space for LGBTQ youth to connect and also to emphasize the importance of engaging in healthy recreation. Classes are being held Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8pm. Self-defense classes are being taught for the month of June (according to LezRideSA’s statement on LezMove, to offer the LGBTQ community “an opportunity to build themselves up and defend their hearts!”), Zumba classes will be held during July, and yoga classes will take place during August. Tentative plans for the month of September include Cross-Fit classes and in October, self-defense classes will resume.

LezRideSA, the San Antonio LGTBQ Bike Social, seeks to “connect and educate our LGBTQ community by  offering team-building opportunities through camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling, travel and outfitting.” Self-defense, yoga, and Zumba will help the LGBTQ community stay both fit and united with allies.

As the LezRideSA coalition sponsor, the Health Collaborative (which offers free fitness classes tailored to the community’s needs) will work to raise awareness of the need for LGBTQ youth support. The Health Collaborative said in its statement on LezMove that it hopes to “address gaps in service and create opportunities for [LGBTQ] youth to engage in healthy recreation,” beginning with the LezMove exercise series.

Cold ice water will be provided by Luther’s Cafe and guests are encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottles. LezRideSA and the Health Collaborative hope to see you there!

The LezMove summer exercise series is also supported by A&N Realty, Cilantro Creative and REI.
