Three cast members from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will be in San Antonio this month to headline the Woodlawn Theater’s annual production of “The Rocky Horror Show.”
The iconic rock musical, which opens at the Woodlawn on October 16, stars Bianca Del Rio as Magenta, Adore Delano as Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Michelle Visage as Riff Raff.
“An institution among hundreds of cult fans, these characters are forever embedded in our hearts,” says the Woodlawn’s artistic director Greg Hinojosa, “However, we are going to take you to an entirely new dimension of science fiction in this staging. Think of it as ‘Rocky Horror’ as a freak circus side show.”
Irreverent and anti-establishment, “The Rocky Horror Show” has become a cult classic around the world ever since it premiered in 1973 at London’s Royal Court Theater.
The plot of the musical, now familiar to its millions of fans, tells the tale of newly-engaged Janet (Carla Sankey) and Brad (Kurt Wehner), who find themselves lost on a cold, rainy night. Mayhem ensues when the couple takes refuge in the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Adore Delano), a transvestite who is hosting the annual convention of visitors from the planet Transsexual.
Audience participation has become one of the hallmarks of “Rocky Horror” productions in the form of callbacks. Hinojosa says that in this production callbacks from the audience are allowed and encouraged. Prop bags will be sold at the theatre for $5, but no homemade props can come into the theatre for safety issues.
“Dig out your fishnet stockings and stiletto heels for the show – costumes make everything twice as much fun,” says Hinojosa.
On Halloween Night, October 31, the Woodlawn will host a costume contest during that night’s performance. The winner will receive a Meet & Greet with the Drag Race stars.
Patrons under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to be allowed in the show – mature language and sexual content abounds.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays and 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, October 16 through November 1 at the Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg Rd. General admission tickets are $35 and $50 for VIP tickets which include a Meet & Greet with all three stars. Call 210-267-8388 for reservations or visit WoodlawnTheatre.org to buy tickets online.
(Update: On October 7, ‘Rocky’ director Greg Hinojosa announced that Adore Dlano had to bow out of the production. Courtney Act, also from ‘Drag Race,’ will take the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.)
