Following the success of All is Calm this past holiday season, The Playhouse will present Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love directed by CEO and artistic director George Green.

First performed in 1983 at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, Fool for Love tells the story of two reunited lovers at the seedy Mojave Dessert Motel.

Truths are revealed and emotions soar as a drunk-in-love Eddie (Damon C. Mentzer) tries to rekindle his relationship with May (Holly Clifford) who dreams of escaping her past.

“Sam Shepard is a brilliant playwright,” Green said in a statement. “He was the Neil LaBute, the Steven Dietz, and the Samuel Hunter of his era. The raw, daring theater that he created in his well-crafted scripts will hold up for many years. When you watch this production, you’ll find it hard to believe that it was written over 30 years ago.”

The production also stars Bill Gundry as “Old Man” and Michael Zaiontz as Martin. Fool for Love is the recipient of several Obie awards and was a finalist for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love, $12-$42, runs Jan. 13 thru Feb 5, Fri.-Sat. 8:00 p.m. and Sun. 3:00 p.m. in the Cellar Theatre, The Playhouse, 800 West Ashby Place, 210.733.7258, theplayhouse.org
