Organizers at Pride Center San Antonio are busy readying two fundraising events, the Emerald Ball on May 25 and the Icon Awards Brunch on June 2.

The eighth annual Emerald Ball will be held this year at Woodlawn Pointe. The variety show, which is organized by photographer Julián P. Ledezma, who is on the Pride Center board, will feature local drag queens, singers, aerialists, burlesque artists, and other performers. Tencha La Jefa will serve as emcee.

Those who attend the Emerald Ball are invited to bring their own alcoholic beverages. Set ups will be sold at the event. A number of VIP tables are available.

The Icon Awards Brunch, which will be held at the Pearl Stable, will bestow awards to “to exemplary members of the community for their outstanding contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.”

Last December, Pride Center called on the community to nominate award recipients who “must be or have been contributing members to the LGBTQ+ community and who have made significant and demonstrable contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.”

Awards will be presented in five categories:

Community Icon
A person that has made significant and meaningful contributions to the LGBTQ+ community

Leadership Icon
A proven leader who has demonstrated a commitment to advancing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer issues in San Antonio

Legacy Icon
A person that has contributed unique achievements of far-reaching and historical importance having an impact on San Antonio’s LGBTQ+ community and/or the City of San Antonio.

Media Icon
A media professional who promotes outstanding representations of the LGBTQ+ community in media.

Political Icon
An elected official who has shown leadership in public policy issues important to the LGBTQ+ community.

In their announcement of the awards, the Pride Center’s board said, “With an eight-year history of serving the greater South Texas LGBTQ+ community, The Center is saving lives every single day and remains one of the most well-respected and relevant non-profit organizations in San Antonio. The Icon’s Brunch is an extraordinary community celebration not to be missed. This exceptional event is the must-attend fundraiser of the year for the community.”
