You may have seen Lauryn Farris and her family in a recent interview that appeared in the Huffington Post as part of their Let Love Define Family series. The occasion for the interview was the final adoption of a 17-year-old transgender girl by Farris and Kerry, her wife of more than 40 years.
Farris and her family run a photography studio, Farris Family Photos. She can often be seen around town with camera in hand, chronicling LGBTQ community events and snapping shots of local newsmakers. She is a frequent contributor to Out In SA.
Those who know Farris well will tell you she is passionate about a cause that is very personal to her: transgender rights. She has twice served as president of the San Antonio Gender Association, is a board member of the Transgender Education Network of Texas and has been a national educator for the Human Rights Campaign’s workshop series, Gender Identity and Our Faith Communities.
This year, Farris was the only person from Texas to be selected as one of the Trans 100, an annual listing of individuals from across the country “who are active in the work of making the lives of trans people better.”
Farris is a devout Christian. In her interview with the Huffington Post she says, “Many of the trailblazers in our community come from some very strong faith backgrounds and they continue with their faith even when rejected by the church.”
Most recently, Farris was named assistant director of the Thrive Youth Center for homeless LGBT youth.
