Pride Center San Antonio is inviting the community to participate in the first long-term study to examine health and well-being of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals.
The five-year Generations study explores identity, stress, health outcomes, and health care and services utilization among lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in “three generations of adults who came of age during different historical contexts.”
The study is being conducted by researchers at the Williams Institute, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), University of Arizona, and Columbia University. The study is affiliated with the California Center for Population Research (CCPR) at UCLA.
Funding is provided by a $3.4 million federal grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
The Generations study examines only the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexuals. According to study organizers:
While transgender people are part of the LGBT community there are important differences between issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. To ensure that research is able to adequately cover their unique experiences, we use separate studies to address issues affecting cisgender LGB and transgender people (regardless of sexual orientation). While both studies have a lot of overlap, there are also unique aspects to each study.
Study organizers refer transgender individuals to their TransPop study and to another study, Project Affirm, both of which explore the lives of transgender people.
Phase one
The first phase of the Generations study is currently underway with individuals from the San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, Tucson, AZ and Austin, TX areas being asked to share their life experiences in a screening survey. From that survey, individuals will be chosen for personal interviews:
It is very important to the success of this research that we get input from a wide variety of people. We want our research to achieve scientifically valid results so that it is has a meaningful impact on LGB people. If you are eligible and volunteer to participate in this study, you will be asked to participate in a 2.5 – 3 hour interview with a researcher where we will ask you to tell us about your life experiences.
The screening survey takes about ten minutes to complete and asks basic demographic questions. Participants who are chosen for in-person interviews will receive a $75 incentive.
