‘Give Out Day’ Raises Funds for Local LGBT Nonprofits

On August 2, over 500 LGBT nonprofit organizations from all 50 states will be participating in a national day of giving dubbed Give Out Day.

Throughout the day-long event, LGBT nonprofits, ranging from the arts to social services agencies, advocacy groups to sports leagues, community centers to health care nonprofits will be soliciting funds for their organizations.

Give Out Day was started in 2013. Since then, over 15,000 individual donors have contributed over $2.4 million to participating nonprofits.

Locally, Pride Center San Antonio, the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, Equality Texas and the Transgender Education Network of Texas are participating.

Give Out Day is organized by the Horizons Foundation which is headquartered in San Francisco. According to its website, Horizons has been “supporting LGBT nonprofit organizations, leaders, and donors for more than 35 years.” Its goals are to:

– Mobilize and increase resources for the LGBT movement and organizations that secure the rights, meet the needs, and celebrate the lives of LGBT people.
– Empower individual donors and promote giving as an integral part of a healthy, compassionate community.
– Steward a permanently endowed fund through which donors can make legacy gifts to ensure our community’s capacity to meet the future needs of LGBT people.

The Horizons Foundation provides training and marketing support to help participating nonprofits maximize the amount of funds they collect on Give Out Day.
