San Antonio neo-soul singer Alyson Alonzo has started a GoFundMe campaign to buy bottled water for the residents of Flint, Michigan.
Alonzo, who will perform at the Hispanic Technology and Community Center in Flint on May 6, hopes to raise $3,000 to rent a U-Haul and load it with bottled water.
On her GoFundMe page Alonzo explains: “They have a food pantry there where they distribute stuff every Wednesday. A basic U-Haul is $1,229.00 and I figured that including water would probably run about $3,000. I was also planning on buying clean water in Michigan when I got there if I didn’t fill the truck here. Seriously, anything helps. I didn’t want to go play a show there and just do nothing to help about their situation.”
As National Public Radio recently reported, Michigan state officials have decided to end subsidies meant to pay water bills for Flint residents who have concerns it may still be unsafe to drink.
