Exclusive First Photos: Rainbow Crosswalk Installation Underway

By the end of today, city crews will have completed the installation of a rainbow crosswalk at the corner of North Main and Evergreen in the heart of the city’s LGBT business district.

The photos here were taken this morning by Councilman Roberto C. Treviño exclusively for Out In SA.

Instead of paint, the city’s Transportation and Capital Improvements department will employ a durable system that is heat transferred on to the asphalt. This assures the colors will not fade as fast as normal paint thus requiring less maintenance.

The official ribbon cutting for the crosswalk is scheduled for Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Luther’s Cafe.

There had been some uncertainty about the date of the ribbon cutting after the councilman’s staff rescheduled the event for Wednesday and then moved it back to Friday.

There was more confusion this morning when local television stations reported the wrong date and time from a press release that went out in error, Treviño told Out In SA.

Treviño asked to the public to stay clear of Main and Evergreen today. The installation process is heat intensive and could pose a safety hazard to bystanders.

Phillip Barcena, Pride San Antonio’s board president is encouraging the community to attend Friday’s ribbon cutting. “The rainbow crosswalk marks a milestone for San Antonio’s LGBT community,” he told Out In SA. “We’re asking to community to come out to celebrate and mark the start of Pride weekend in our city.”

Rainbow Crosswalk Ribbon Cutting, at 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 29 at Luther’s Cafe, 1503 N. Main Avenue. Ribbon cutting to be followed by Pathway to Policy, a community conversation with Councilman Treviño.
