The San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce is seeking performers, sponsors and vendors for their fifth annual National Coming Out Day celebration on October 13 at the Mission Marquee Plaza.

National Coming Out Day started in 1988 when LGBTQ people were encouraged to come out on the theory that once people know that they have loved ones who are LGBTQ, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.

“Celebrating National Coming Out Day allows us to import the importance of joining together with our allies to make our community stronger,” an announcement from the LGBT Chamber explains. “This message of inclusivity and acceptance inspires our community to come together in new ways, ensuring all LGBTQ individuals and families to feel safe, secure and supported.”

The San Antonio event will include performances including spoken word, poetry, song, dance, drag performance and short films. Performers in all these disciplines are encouraged to apply for a time slot on the performance stage. Organizers are also looking for someone to emcee the stage show.

The Chamber is also encouraging vendors and food trucks to offer their services so the attendees can have refreshments during the event.

Most importantly, sponsors are needed to help underwrite the cost of producing the event. “When you become a sponsor, we will work with your company to generate community exposure and marketing opportunities through our website, social media, and traditional event presence,” the Chamber’s announcement promises.

The site of the event, Mission Marquee Plaza, is a park which has been built on the grounds of the marquee of the former Mission Drive-In Theater on the southeast side. The space includes an open-air theater where visitors and can bring their own blackest, chairs and coolers to enjoy the show.

San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce presents their fifth annual National Coming Out Day celebration on Saturday, October 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Mission Marquee Plaza, 3100 Roosevelt. Free and open to the public.

Performers, vendors and sponsors with questions about participating should contact Kevin Dombrow via email at kevind@waterwalk.com. For a sponsorship application click here. For a performer’s application click here.
